OpenStudy (milliedelongg):

An earthquake struck city A measured 8.17 on the Richter scale, and another earthquake struck city B measured 6.8. How many times more intense was the earthquake that struck city A than the earthquake that struck city B?

OpenStudy (518nad):

hey richter scale is base 10 log scale

OpenStudy (milliedelongg):

I'm unsure how to figure it out I'm not sure what that is

OpenStudy (518nad):

so when they say 8.17, its really a constant times 10^8.17 and 6.8 -> 10^6.8

OpenStudy (518nad):

so how many times bigger is 10^8.17 than 10^6.8

OpenStudy (518nad):

use a calculator to find 10^8.17/10^6.8

OpenStudy (milliedelongg):

I got 23.442

OpenStudy (518nad):

yup

OpenStudy (milliedelongg):

thank you so much!!
