Glycolysis can also occur when there is no oxygen present. This happens in anaerobic respiration, but the difference is that with anaerobic respiration, glycolysis is the only ATP generating process that occurs. Having said that, I believe that it occurs in all living things because it occurs in photosynthetic organisms as well as aerobic and anaerobic organisms.
