My explanation is not the most clear so


if you want 12% cheaper of a price we do not know, we will call this unknown price x, then we would do

12% of x then take it away from the original price
12% as a decimal is 12/100=0.12

so we would do

x-0.12x=19

because 19 is how much it costs

we would factorise the left hand side

x(1-0.12)=19
1-0.12=0.88

so we get

x(0.88)=19

solve for x
