Self-automated cars are a thing of the future and soon might be the new norm for our upcoming years. The question here is, how will this affect our economy? Will there be a positive or negative change to our money? Though the idea of self-driving cars is not new. In the 1920s people, have thought of the electrical cars, and viewed as the “wave of the future”. Since self-automation is a brand new and exciting idea, there would be a high demand for self-automated cars. Car companies would definitely make a good amount of money off this. At the same time, people who make a living off driving would definitely lose their jobs and recession is most likely to occur. There is a both positive and negative side to this when talking about the economics of it. To buy a Self-Driving car you would need to pay a price of twenty-thousand dollars. Pretty cheap, right? A regular car would cost about the same price, which makes this self-automated car affordable for the middle class working people. One of the lingering issues of this car are liability issues. If a self-automated car gets into a car crash, who will be responsible for it? Would it be the people in the car, or the manufacturers themselves? This is an on-going issue that is being discussed, and it’s most likely to be the manufactures fault. Being that they are the ones who are supposed to make sure the cars work 100% well. Not only will there be liability issues, many Americans will lose their jobs. People who make a living out of driving taxi cars, ubers, lyft, car2go, etc. will lose their jobs. Not only that, but with self-driving technology, truck driving jobs and buses may lose their jobs too if those also adapt to self-driving technology. About 180,000 people are taxi drivers, 160,000 are Uber drivers, 500,000 school bus drivers and 160,000 are transit bus drivers. Its projected about 4 million people will lose their jobs if self-automation becomes popular which will put America into a recession. Not only that, but there is said to be self-driving commercial trucks which would put the people who drive those trucks out of jobs. Not only would drivers be affected but auto repair shops as well. If everyone would have self-automated car, there would be no need for repair shops. They would go out of business, or would need to learn about this new technology and how to fix it if something goes wrong. Trial lawyers as well, would need specialize in auto accidents. Though, we will not see the impact of automated cars until the years 2020 and 2040. There is still a long way before this recession hits. By the end of 2025, it’s predicted that self-driving cars are going to be the new norm; car companies are projected to make between .2 trillion dollars and 1.9 trillion annually just by selling these cars. Despite of the negative aspects of self-driving cars there is surely a positive one. An obvious one is the safety of the passengers. Self-automation will definitely decrease the chances of car accidents. More lives will be saved and less money will be spent on hospital bills itself. It’s said that self-driving cars will decrease the chance of accidents by 90% which will save us billions of dollars in damages. In 2012, there were 30,800 car crashes. According to Forbes.com, it states “These crashes lead to the deaths of 22,912 drivers and passengers of cars, 4,957 on motorcycles, 4,743 pedestrians, and 726 on bicycles. So, if autonomous cars worked so poorly that they killed 10,000 people a year they would still be saving around 20,000 lives.” This shows how self-driving cars can really help society and can save us from spending money on damages. If automated cars can save 30,000 lives yearly, we can save up to 276 billion. In 2005, research showed how car crashes led to 41 billion dollars in medical and work loss costs. So, the total of deadly car crashes per year is $317 billion. If you add the total of these, plus other stuff we might have missed, we save over half a trillion dollars just because of these self-automated cars. Not only on accidents, we would save money on our gas. Self-driving cars will now be electric, so the need for gas will be unnecessary. The people will definitely save money on gas. Self-automated cars have both its positives and negatives when it comes down to economics. These cars will cause a loss in jobs for people who making a living off driving cars. Not only that but also possibly the transit district. But, this will also save us billions of dollars in damages when it comes to car crashes and will save a lot of lives over the course of our time. Only time can tell how Self-Driving cars can affect us. The future is here
