How did the development of intercontinental missiles affect the Cold War? Intercontinental missiles made it possible to limit the impact of nuclear weapons to the United States and the Soviet Union. Intercontinental missiles had little effect because their use was banned by the United Nations. The possibility of an attack by intercontinental nuclear missiles kept both superpowers in check. The Cold War was not affected by intercontinental missiles since both sides signed a treaty to never use them.
