OpenStudy (518nad):

Is quartz considered a piezoelectric material, need some questions answered about the file attached in here

OpenStudy (518nad):

@Kainui

iYuko (iyuko):

Yo. Wrong subject.

OpenStudy (518nad):

need some questions answered about this

OpenStudy (iambatman):

quartz the mineral? :O

OpenStudy (518nad):

yeah, if u look at problem 3, there are making a quartz unimorph, and im supposed to make a PZT unimorph, is that the same thing as that

OpenStudy (kainui):

quartz the singer formerly known as prince

OpenStudy (518nad):

oh my gudness

OpenStudy (iambatman):

Oh my I see Young's modulus haha!

OpenStudy (iambatman):

Engineers are so cute

OpenStudy (518nad):

lol

OpenStudy (iambatman):

But I think you're on the right track dan

OpenStudy (518nad):

k np, u want me to make u a sensor?

OpenStudy (518nad):

hmu

OpenStudy (iambatman):

Yes

OpenStudy (kainui):

I don't know what any of this stuff is, unimorph? All these things are like weird conventions for things I don't know what they are

OpenStudy (518nad):

k hang on ill show u what i really need

OpenStudy (518nad):

http://prntscr.com/dhft3j http://prntscr.com/dhftkx okay so lets say this the start, they gave me this, and said find the constitutive equations for your piezoeletric and piezo cermaic materials, online or wherever. So I looked through some of those practice problems, I dont see how exactly they are making use of these matrices there, it looks like theyre just plugging in some coefficients and solving it

OpenStudy (518nad):

ahh this is vague sorry!

OpenStudy (518nad):

gonna go try to figure out a bit more before coming back!

OpenStudy (kainui):

lol maybe we should get in a call if you wanna catch me up on some of this stuff yeah xD

OpenStudy (518nad):

itd be great i actually could... bit i literally have no idea about whats going on, u probably know more than me on this stuff at this point

OpenStudy (518nad):

all im trying to do now is put some equations together in some template code and get an output

OpenStudy (518nad):

i will take the time to learn about all this stuff before the exam though u shud join me for that!

OpenStudy (kainui):

haha well looks like matlab going on and I understand the tensor stuff but looks ilke there's some other tensor notation you're converting too lol

OpenStudy (518nad):

have you ever used flex pde, i cant show u my code so far

OpenStudy (518nad):

that has a worked out soultion to a PZT actuator, im trying to pull out his constitutive equations from the code

OpenStudy (518nad):

I can* show u my code

OpenStudy (iambatman):

What's a PZT actuator

OpenStudy (518nad):

piezoelectric material is like this material that behaves funky under stress and strains, because of its crystal properties, if u compress of expand it, there can be electrif fields that are produced within it, or even going backwards if u induce a field on it, it can expand and contract to reach statis

OpenStudy (518nad):

stasis

OpenStudy (518nad):

these properties are used to 'actuate' stuff like they can be used as a way of doing microscopic movements, used as temp sensors, pressure sensors, and so on

OpenStudy (kainui):

flex pde? no what's that? is it a specific PDE or is it like some program

OpenStudy (518nad):

the basic point is this, u have a material it has some kinda stress / strain tenso, as a functiong of voltage , temp, and pressure, based on its constitutive equations, and we are just seeing how it behaves under a voltage for this problem

OpenStudy (518nad):

yeah its a PDE solver, finite element method program
