Learning about Greek mythology helps us understand the beginnings of Western civilisation. It also helps give us a wider perspective of religion. Another good reason to learn about Greek mythology is because much great literature, religious practices and stories in the west are based from it. This site often feature "Hermes" when you send a message. H was the god of messages in ancient greece, I think. And a HUGE number of western words are based/derived from Greek and Roman/Latin.
Thus, in Roman, "bacchus" was the god of drinkiing shall we say. There is a pub in Newcastle on tyne, UK, which is called "The Bacchus", presumably after said god, since N, formerly "Novo Castria" was a Roman settlement.
Tracking similar to Greek would reveal greek connections. Pathetic = sorrowful, Pathos similar, pathogenic in medics meaning something sorrowful ?
