OpenStudy (blenchiki):

For the ceramic tile installation in her bathroom remodeling project, Naomi has determined she will need 648 tiles. The tiles can be purchased for $0.43, or she can purchase them for $34.50 per box, of 100 tiles. How much money would she save if she bought only whole boxes of tile instead of individual tiles? a. $37.14 b. $71.64 c. $207.00 d. $241.50 e. $278.64

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

How much does she spend if she buys 648 tiles at $0.43 each?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

$278.64

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Good. How many boxes of 100 tiles must she buy?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Naomi is in a hurry to tile her bathroom, and you're holding her up. Are you still there?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

oh gosh lol that was good but i had to do something real quick sorry

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you back now?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

yes but how many tiles are in a box?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You wrote this above "she can purchase them for $34.50 per box, of 100 tiles."

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

so only 1?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. She needs 648 tiles. A box has 100 tiles. How many full boxes of 100 tiles each must she buy?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

6?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If she buys only one box, she'll have only 100 tiles out of the 648 tiles she needs. I won't use that bathroom because it will look terrible.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If she buys 6 boxes, she will have 600 tiles. That is still less than 648.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

6 boxes are not enough.

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

so she would buy 7 boxes?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct. If she buys 7 boxes, at $34.50 per box, how much does she spend on the 7 boxes of tiles?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

241.50 so then i would take 278.64 and subtract it from 241.50 and get 37.14?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct.

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

thank you im sorry im not very good at math haha

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The answer is A. The problem is done, and you have the correct answer. Now I have a question for you. Here is my question. She can buy 648 loose tiles and spend $278.64. She can buy 7 boxes of 100 and spend $241.50. There is another way she could buy exactly 648 tiles and be cheaper than $241.50. Can you think of what it is?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

well i wasnt thinking just buy the 6 boxes and then do the rest individually but i think that only comes out to about 243.48?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You did the math wrong, but your method is correct. 6 boxes: 6 * $34.50 = $207.00 48 loose tiles: 48 * $0.43 = $20.64 $207.00 + $20.64 = $227.64, cheaper than $241.50 How did you get $243.48?

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

i multiplied the boxes and price wrong

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok. You had the correct idea. Great work!

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

i still need help on a bunch more unfortunately

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

gtg I may be back on in about an hour.

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

ok

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If you see me io, tag me or message me anytime. It's been great working with you.

OpenStudy (blenchiki):

okay thank you so much

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):
