OpenStudy (nesha97):

Please explain.... A bacteria culture has 2,000 bacteria. The number of bacteria increases by 5% each hour. How many bacteria are there after 12 hours? Please explain

OpenStudy (royalranger):

What is 5 percent of 2,000? That should help you get started.

OpenStudy (danjs):

each hour the current number is increased to 105% of th ecurrent number. so after 1 hour you should have 2000*1.05 After 2 hours 2000* 1.05 * 1.05 after 3 hours 2000 * 1.05 * 1.05 * 1.05 see the pattern?

OpenStudy (danjs):

It is an exponential equation , y=A*b^x , initial value A, and base multiplier b.

OpenStudy (nesha97):

so after 12 hours i got 3591.71 (rounded) did i do that right??

OpenStudy (danjs):

looks right

OpenStudy (nesha97):

Thank you..... and can you show me how to do it with the formula ( i go to a online school and the video is very hard to understand and the teacher takes forever to email back)

satellite73 (satellite73):

just what you did to increase a number by \(5\%\) multiply it by \(100\%+5\%=105\%=1.05\) to do it \(x\) times (say 12 times for example) multiply it by \(1.05^x\)

OpenStudy (nesha97):

oh kml i can't i believe i just really did that for each number when all i had to do was put the exponent of 12...I had a slow moment...thanks you guys
