OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

The ordered pairs in the table represent a linear function. x f(x) āˆ’2 1 āˆ’1 3 0 5 1 7 2 9 What is the value of the function when x = 5? 0 10 15 20

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Blackops are you allowed to use a calculator?

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

yeah

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Do you have a texas instrument? (Like A TI-84)

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

yes

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Ok click "stat" then when edit is selected press enter. You should now have a bunch of tables. Is there anything in the tables?

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

no nothing is happening, it's old and doesn't work right

OpenStudy (jingle535):

No nothing is how it is supposed to be :) Use the arrows keys to go to the upper left hand corner and click "2nd" then click 1 and finally enter.

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

oh well it's not turning on now

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

do you know any other ways to solve it?

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Yes we have a few options. Option A. I help you dowload a calculator application on your computer than you can also use in the future. Option B. I give you the answer. Option C. You attempt to solve using a matrix (I am not 100% sure of how this one works, I usually just use a calculator)

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

I know a calculator website

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

it's called mathway

OpenStudy (jingle535):

The problem with mathway is that it is more a problem solver (like a cheat) than a calculator. You could download the TI-83 plus at https://sites.google.com/site/ti83interactivecalculator/calculator

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

oh

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

i'm really sorry but may I have the answer I have other subjects to work on and I'm trying to hurry

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Well shoot I just realised I somewhat messed up. I thought you had a quadratic function but it is only linear. You can solve that by just creating an equation and then substituting in 5 for the X value, and solving for Y.

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

oh thank you!

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Sorry I wasted your time a bit, did you get an answer? I know you are low on time so I can just give you it if you need.

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

no I'm having trouble figuring it out

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Ok so your base equation is y=mx + b, have you learned that yet?

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

yes

OpenStudy (jingle535):

So you need to find the m and the b values. the B value is the value when y = 0 (the y intercept) The m value is the slope, which is how much the x changes each time.

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

ok

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

I need a little more help

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Ok so for the table that you have the headers are a little odd, think about it as being like this y x āˆ’2 1 āˆ’1 3 0 5 1 7 2 9 So to find the b value you look where y is 0 y x āˆ’2 1 āˆ’1 3 0(here)5 <- X value 1 7 2 9 and look at the x value.

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

ok

OpenStudy (jingle535):

So what is your equation now?

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

I'm still really confused sorry

OpenStudy (jingle535):

Ok so using that data you would be able to make the equation y = 2x + 5. You can use this equation to find the value when x = 5 by substituting 5 in for x, then solving for y. Just so you know, I made this equation as follows, The original equation comes from the slope of the line (y = mx + b) Then you substitute 2 in for m because the x's change by two numbers every time Finally you substitute 5 in for b because when y = 0, x = 5

OpenStudy (blackops2_143):

thank you!

OpenStudy (jingle535):

No problem, lol :)

OpenStudy (jingle535):

The final answer was 15, just so you know!
