OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

Can someone help with this problem on linear equations? I do not know where to start.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

OpenStudy (zrock):

sorry im really bad at linear equations

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

That's okay.

OpenStudy (royalranger):

y = 1/8x + 3.5miles

OpenStudy (royalranger):

Would you like me to explain?

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

yes please

OpenStudy (royalranger):

Alright. So he went from Boston to CH to Lexington. and they tell us Boston to lexington is 3.5 miles. Then they tell s his horse goes 1/8 of a mile every minute, hence: |dw:1481848898698:dw|

OpenStudy (royalranger):

Then we just add them together and set them equal to y like they ask us to

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

So if I plug that in, I get a graph that looks something like this. Am I on the right track here?

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

no wait I'm not I need to solve for Y I think. I apologize, I think I got mixed up.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

If I solve for Y, I get y=x/8+3.5

OpenStudy (royalranger):

Why would you do that? you are not supposed to find what y is. If you did, you would need a value for x, which you are not given.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

So wait.. what do I do now?

OpenStudy (royalranger):

Thats it. That is the linear equation. y = (1/8)x + 3.5 is the equation of a line.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

Thank you!
