@Opal13 subtract and x's and bring the constant on one side and after divided by the coefficient of x
OpenStudy (opal13):
Can you give me an example please?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
so -3x-x = 12-8
-4x = 4
OpenStudy (hafeda):
@Opal13 now u can divide both side by 4 to get x alone and your answer

OpenStudy (opal13):
So, first you need to minus 8 from both side?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
yes get the constant on one side of the equation and unknown on the other side
after that apply math rules and solve
OpenStudy (opal13):
So 8-3x-x = 12 - 8?
OpenStudy (opal13):
But then 8-3x won't work, will it?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
yes but because you are subtracting -8 from on side u have to do the same amount on the other side of the equation as well to balance out
so it will look like as follow :
8-3x-x-8 = 12-8

Ok so then it will be 5x = 4?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
Yes, but -3x -x equal -4x. because they are both negative
OpenStudy (opal13):
Ok, then -3x/ 3 = -4 / 3?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
yes, but rememeber if -3x-x = 4 so u have -4x = 4
OpenStudy (opal13):
-3x/3 = 4/3

?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
let me ask you a question Opal what is 3x+x equal
OpenStudy (hafeda):
no, u have -4x = 4
x = -1
OpenStudy (opal13):
3x
OpenStudy (hafeda):
if u have 3x and 1x what will be your answer

OpenStudy (opal13):
You mean 3x + 1x, or 3x - 1x?
OpenStudy (opal13):
If it's 3x + 1x it will be 4x
OpenStudy (opal13):
If it would be 3x - 1x it would be 2x
OpenStudy (hafeda):
yes but in your case now you have (-3x -x) NOT ( 3x -x ). do u see the difference between them
OpenStudy (opal13):
yes, now I see

OpenStudy (opal13):
So we were -3x = 4
OpenStudy (opal13):
Now do we need to devid both sides with -3 or 3?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
OK so what does -3x - 1x equals to
OpenStudy (opal13):
-4x
OpenStudy (hafeda):
OK so u have -4x = 4 now what

now -4x/ 4 or -4x/ -4?
OpenStudy (hafeda):
what number or value is the coefficient of x, is it -4 and 4
OpenStudy (opal13):
-4
OpenStudy (opal13):
I think
OpenStudy (hafeda):
yes u r right now -4 now divide both side my -4
