OpenStudy (sadie_weber):

Why do you always have to cut your hair, fingernails, and the grass?

OpenStudy (ann_5297):

The fingernails and hair are mostly made of a non living substance called keratin.. And only the basal part of these structures are living,i e the root of the hair in your scalp and your nail bed. So even though you cut your hair or nails the growing region is alive and healthy and keeps adding more keratin which makes them grow. As for grass it has clumps of active cells at specific intervals along its length which divides and increase the length of the grass blade.
