OpenStudy (phagey):

Determine the number and type of complex solutions and possible real solutions for each of the following equations. 1) 2x2 + 5x + 3 = 0 x=-1,-3/2 2) 4x3 – 12x + 9 = 0 3) 2x4 + x2 – x + 6 = 0

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hint: use Descartes rule of signs, do the f(x) and f(-x) signs check

OpenStudy (mathmale):

With deference to jdoe0001, I'd suggest that you just find the discriminant of the given quadratic. What are the coefficients a, b and c of this quadratic? Form and evaluate the discriminant\[b^2-4ac\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If the discriminant is + there will be 2 real, unequal roots. If 0 there will be 2 real, equal roots. if the discrim. is -, there will be 2 complex roots
