Going way way back, centuries in European/British history, there were such things as "The Holy Roman Empire", the "Divine Right of Monarchs" (QE2, HRH Princess Elizabeth, as ANNOINTED QUEEN by the Archbishop of Canterbury round about 1953ish in a religious/state ceremony).
So, the UK monarchy and the Church of England, poss also known as the Anglican Church and the Monarchy are v closely linked. And this is AFTER the SCHISM which Henry 8 made with the Roman Catholic church. 
Jerusalem and the middle east, Nazareth, and Bethlehem are all mentioned in the bible and part of christian lore.
The crusades are portrayed as an attempt by "christendom" to protect the "Holy Land".
