I've not seen the film nor looked, yet, at the link but ... it's a good question ... 

-What does it means to show " good character " ?
Although it's via a TV set that I see sports, someone such as tennis player Roger Federer or golfer Jack Nicklaus would seem to me to show "good character". Very good at concentrating on what they have to do. Very skilful. In RF's case, graceful both when he's losing and when he's winning. And, able to accept victory and defeat generously.
Underneath their skill levels and public personae I guess that their "characters" within the sport are as hard as nails or diamonds. Hence their phenomenal achievements in their sports.
