i'd guess that GC's tone to her would have been playfully mocking. I've not got the Cant tales to hand, but they seem to be a sort of situation comedy/reality show of a pile of, possibly, misfits all going to Canterbury, UK, as a Pilgrimage for their various "wrongdoings". Canterbury is, I think, the Seat of the Anglican church, UK's nominal religion (after the Henry 8 schism). Archbishop of C is a big "player" in UK posh society.
