Who led a “witch hunt” for Communist spies in the United States government during the early 1950s? A. Secretary of State Dean Acheson B. President Dwight Eisenhower C. Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren D. Senator Joseph McCarthy
@Arcadiouse
Okay, so we know that the secretary of state wouldn't be able to "lead" by lead they mean start it and keep it going
"Reds under the beds" thing, this, going after such names as Maestro Bass Singer Paul Robeson, Charlie Chaplin and a few others. Senator Joseph McCarthy I think it was .... How far soviet infiltration had actually got into US is another matter. Roughly at the same time, though, in UK, the USSR had managed to form the notorious "Cambridge Spy Ring", featuring Burgess, Maclean and Philby (all Etonians), with Sir Anthony Blunt in there as well. Blunt was the Queen's adviser on art before he was exposed as a russian spy. A fascinating period of Western europenan/US history.
