A Hero's Journey

This is a story I wrote a few years ago for a school assignment, and I thought it was pretty good, so I kept it. I am going to share it with...whoever happens to be looking at this.

Ordinary World
Alex had green eyes and blonde hair which blew in the wind as he sat over the ledge of the building watching the tiny people and cars go by. Sitting outside helped him get over his stress at home. His parents were fighting again and it made him angry. As he sat there, he noticed a glowing mist in a corner of the roof that was glowing in orange light. It started to change from orange, to red, to blue, then it was gone.

Call to Adventure
Alex started to wonder why Dr. Burk was acting so strange. He looked like a usual scientist, with the lab coat, grey hair, and mustache. As Alex sat in a chair he heard Dr. Burk mumbling something about demons. Before Alex could ask, Dr. Burk turned on a t.v. which showed a huge purple creature. It was the size of a truck! It had 4 arms, and a face with horns coming out the cheeks. Alex stared in horror as it tossed a fire truck aside like it was a toy. "It has come through from another dimension. We noticed that there were doorways opening up from all over the world. We just can't get to them before they close." Dr. Burk explained. "If we don't stop this soon, we will be over run with them."

Refusal
Alex could not believe this was happening. He didn't want to be any part of it. He stuffed the last of his savings into his backpack along with some clothes and other essentials. He was going to run. Run to someplace where there aren't any of those creatures. As he was walking down the street, something caught his eye.

The Mentor...Sort of
There laying on the sidewalk, was a rainbow medallion. It's mesmerizing glow drew Alex towards it. As soon as he touched it A rainbow beam shot out and made a holographic image. In it was a very old man, with pointy ears and razor sharp piranha like teeth. "Alex" it spoke in a hazy voice. "You are not an ordinary child. Your an ancient being from long ago, A protector of this world. The anger you feel, the power, is what this world needs to save it." "Why me?" Alex asked "I don't want to be powerful. I wanna be normal." Alex complained. The hologram looked at him pitifully and screamed; "WELL YOU'RE NOT NORMAL SO GET OVER IT! GO TO THE PORTAL AND DO YOUR JOB!" Then the hologram disappeared back into the amulet.

Crossing the Threshold
"Stupid rainbow man. Why should I listen to him?" Alex grumbled as he walked across the roof of the building to where he saw the light. He walked into the light and almost fell of a cliff! He stopped himself right before he tumbled. He looked at his surroundings. To the left, was a tree made of gems and a desert. To the right, was a looming tower with more rainbow beams shooting out of it, creating portals to his dimension. "Which way should I go?" He asked. "I know! Eeny meenie miney moe-" "GO TO THE TOWER YOU IDIOT!" The man from the amulet screamed.

Tests
"I WILL DECIDE!!! NOT YOU!" Alex fumed. Then suddenly, he was surrounded in a purple aura and he felt so strong. He imagined himself at the tower, and he teleported to its base. "Well the good news is we are here." Amulet said. "What's the bad news?" Alex asked as he brushed the dirt off his clothes. "The bad news... well, take a look." As alex looked up, He suddenly noticed the many many many different monsters that had surrounded him. "Hmmm" Alex said. "I wonder..." The first of the monsters attacked him, and as he did Alex smashed the ground with his fist, sending a purple shockwave through the army, turning them to ashes.

Approach
"How many more?" Alex groaned as he pulled himself up more stairs. "Isn't there an elevator? These stairs go on forever!" Alex said. "STOP COMPLAINING! You can destroy an army of monsters but you whine like a child when you have to climb stairs?" Amulet fumed. "Besides we are almost there."

Ordeal
"We finally made it!" Alex said, as he reached the top of the stairs. "Hello Nephew." A voice said. Alex didn't even look up. He sat down and breathed heavily. "Hey." he wheezed. "Stop sending monsters to my world or I'm gonna... gonna.. Gonna... ugh." He said as he slumped over and died. "Well that was easier than I thought." The voice said. "Killed by the stairs. Why didn't he just teleport?" Alex body was then shrouded in a white light, as he was revived by the amulet. "Okay. I'ma kill you now." Then Alex let a huge explosion destroy the whole building, Closing the portals to his dimension.

Reward
Alex teleported back to the cliff where he almost fell. He casually strolled over to the gem tree. "I'll be taking this. Yoink" he said as he pulled the gem tree from the ground and slung it over his back.

The "Journey" Home
"Now how do I get back home?" Alex asked aloud. "Well I would advise you not to climb any more stairs you might die again." Amulet teased. "Well I can't teleport home can I?" Alex asked. "No actually you can't I will take you home. But you must return me to my resting place." Amulet said. "On the sidewalk? Why would you want to go back there?" "Because its not a sidewalk you simpleton it's another dimension!" The Amulet Glowed so bright Alex had to shut his eyes.

Return
Alex set the amulet back on the sidewalk and walked home. As he did this, he noticed a strange bat-like creature watching him. It hissed and a blue tongue came out of its mouth. That's not normal alex thought as he got ready for a fight. That's not normal at all.
