how do I Tag can I do @?
@pandasurvive OH!!!!! THAT WORKS!!!!!
@Hero
hello?
\(\dfrac{x^2 - 3x -10}{x^2 + 2x -35 } \cdot \dfrac{x^2 + 4x-21}{x^2 + 9x + 14}\)
First we have to factor each one of those trinomials.
ok
Let us begin with \(x^2 -3x - 10\) Any ideas on how to factor this?
um, we just started this lesson and I am not very good at it
Well first we have to find two numbers that multiply to get -10, yet add to get -3. I wonder if it is possible for you to think of two such numbers. @Amythehedgehog
um, this is confusing
@Amythehedgehog What are some of the factor pairs of 10? We know 10 and 1 are two factors? What are some others?
5
2
factors of 3.....1
Yes, 5 and 2 is the other factor pair of 10. Let's deal with the "three" this way I wonder if you can solve this: \(a \times b = -10\) \(a + b = -3\) What would be a and b in this case?
O-O um 1 + 2 = 3
The a and b also has to work for \(a \times b = -10\). Hint: the a and b involves the 5 and 2 you found earlier. We just need to figure out if the five or two is positive or negative. See if you can figure out which combination would work for both equations: \(a \times b = -10\) \(a + b = -3\)
3 x 1 = 3
Once again @Amythehedgehog the values for a and b involve the 5 and 2 you found earlier. There is some combination of -5, 5, 2, or -2 that will work.
2?
combining is adding right?
sorry I am not a smart girl
I am only 13
Let's do this one equation at a time. What two numbers do you think would work for the following equation: \(a \times b = -10\). Keep in mind, the ten is NEGATIVE and you should respond with TWO numbers. One for a and one for b. So your response should be something like \(a =\) (some number) \(b = \) (some other number)
um, um, I am still confused
What are you confused about?
how do I multiply something to get a negetive number
If you multiply a positive number with a negative number, the result is a negative number. For example, \(-7 \times 4 = -28\)
O-O
@Amythehedgehog the ball is in your court now.
what?
Okay, let's do it this way. I'll show you how to factor something like \(x^2 - 7x + 6\) The first step is to find two numbers that multiply to get \(-6\) yet add to get \(7\). In other words, we need to solve this equation: \(a \times b = 6\) \(a + b = -7\) After some trial and error we see that the only two numbers that will work is \(-6, and -1\)
um, maybe I'll just ask my parents for help, never mind
Good luck @Amythehedgehog. Keep at it. I'm sure you will understand how to solve these problems eventually. Have a good one.
