What literary element can varying sentence structure and length affect in a story?
Varying sentence structure and length affects the \(\bf{\underline{pacing}}\) throughout the text. The pacing can also affect the overall tone and mood of the work. For example: "I'm so stressed out. I don't know. I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm going insane. Maybe I should take a break. Maybe I should take a vacation." Notice how the lines are short, causing the pace to be much faster. This faster pace shows an agitated/distressed tone/mood. Now take a look at this: "I watch the waves as they gently crawl up the sand closer to me, and then slowly back away again. I lie back in my beach chair, enjoying the warmth from the sun. A soft, cool breeze co-mingles with the heat of the sun, working together to create a perfect temperature. What could be more perfect than such a tranquil day at the beach as this?" Notice how the lines are much longer and drawn out slower. This pacing creates a calmer tone and a more relaxed mood.
