it is definitely extraneous, whatever you get

the left hand side of the equation is \[\frac{1}{x+4}+\frac{1}{2}\] the right hand side is \[\frac{1}{x+4}\] there is no way for them to be equal because the left hand is \(\frac{1}{2}\) more than the right
