1.13 Unit 1 Test: Part 2
1.Kevin ran 4 miles more than Steve ran. The sum of their distance is 26miles. How far did Steve run? The domain of the solution is {0, 4, 11, 22}. (a) Define your variable(b) Write algebraic equations for the distances each person ran(c) Write an equation that can help you solve the problem(d) Solve the equation.(e) Check your answer (a) K = # of miles Kevin ran S = # of miles Steve ran (b) K = S + 4 S = S (c) S + S + 4 = 26 (d) S + S + 4 = 26 2S + 4 = 26 2S = 22 S = 11 (e) 11 + 11 + 4 = 26 22 + 4 = 26 26 = 26 2. Explain how the order of operations determines how to simplify a numeric expression. Be sure to explain the rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the use of grouping symbols. use examples to illustrate your points. Order of operations, or PEMDAS, is the method which must be used in order to simplify a numeric expression. P or Parentheses is the grouping symbol in which has priority over the operations of multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. When solving a numeric expression, operations within parentheses should be solved first. *Brackets are another grouping symbol which is sometimes utilized in numeric expressions. They take priority over parentheses. Example: [3 + (4 + 5)] First you complete the addition operation of 4 + 5 which is 9, then look outside the parentheses to do 3 + 9 which is 12. M or Multiplication, and D or Division, are the next two letters in PEMDAS, or our order of operations. They have the same level of priority as each other. Parentheses and Brackets take priority over them, with Addition and Subtraction falling behind. A or Addition, and S or Subtraction, are the last two letters in PEMDAS, or our order of operations. Similar to Multiplication and Division, they have the same priority level, which means these two operations are done after Brackets, Parentheses, Multiplication and Division have been done.
