`Take a look at the word "Hôpital" in French, or again the word "hôtel". The French put a "accent circonflexe" on the "o" because the words came from the English language and originally contained an "s". The "s" in English made it difficult to pronounce for the French, so they removed it but kept the ˆaccent on top of the vowel before where the "s" used to be.` ^Google Welcome to QuestionCove.
