Rice is a symbol of life in the book of Nectar in a Sieve. Nathan had a good harvest year and shared his happiness with his newly wedded wife. He hands her grains from his harvest with hope to impress her. As Rukmani learns to plant many crops, she is amazed by the wonder of seeds that contain, for her, life itself. The monsoon storm destroys the rice paddy and the crops that were in the garden, and with it, the family’s chance to eat that harvest season. They use their valuable savings to buy rice at expensive prices, for without it. they will not live. When the drought hit the village it takes the life of the crops, Rukmani runs her fingers through the last of her saved rice. That would soon run out.
