What did President Johnson's escalation of the Vietnam War and President Nixon's involvement in covering up the Watergate scandal demonstrate to the American public?

Depending on the context, I think a lot of answers would be acceptable here. Generally, it seems like both Johnson's and Nixon's actions demonstrated a lack of care and respect by the government for the public's interests as well as maybe the ability of the government to mislead the public.
