How do you identify and make sense of conflicting view points in text?

this is an open-ended question but I will give it my best shot

try to compare what is similar about what the authors are saying, what is different. then thinking about which one(s) are credible, and why. sometimes there's a person who is clearly right or clearly wrong, but usually it will be a matter of interpretation
