During the game you will see many referrals, some of the references would consist of The Shining, Stephen King references, another referral would be Donnie Darko. The main event in Alan Wake is him jumping in Lake to save his wife, Alice that action is the ending parts of the game. When playing the game, it makes you think the events again are also unfolding, but it already has. At the final parts of the story, Alan Wake creates a doppelganger named Mr. Scratch; Alan Wake tells him being the doppelganger that he is the one that will meet his friends. During the whole game, we're playing as Mr. Scratch, which explains the real Alan Wake that we see on the TV screen. Alan Wake knew that the only way to save Alice was to stay in his cabin or the darkness to continue writing to finish the manuscript. Alan also knew that he needed to escape the darkness to save Alice or himself, though he knew keeping both himself and Alice wouldn't be possible. All throughout you played as Mr. Scratch. Somewhere in mid-game when it showed the KEY EVENT again and showed him escaping. All throughout the game, you're led to believe that Alan wrote himself to survive but truthfully the Alan Wake we see that emerged from the water and survived was Mr. Scratch, the real Alan Wake needed to stay in the cabin in the darkness to complete the manuscript. The reason is while you're playing, you'll get glimpsed of Alan Wake inside the tv talking to himself and trying to find a possible way to continue narrating the story as himself. That's the REAL Alan Wake, and the one we're controlling in the game is, in fact, the doppelganger Mr. Scratch. In the final cutscene, Alan jumps in the lake again to save Alice the one person that emerged out of the water was Alice; the Real Alan Wake is still in the cabin while Mr. Scratch jumped and sacrificed himself to bring Alice back. While Mr.Scratch jumped into the lake to save Alice, the real Alan Wake was still in the Cabin trying to finish the manuscript and get out of the darkness. There are three possibilities: The Bad: Just like Donnie Darko and Thomas Zane, Alan Wake had jumped into the water to save Alice while he never came back up. The Good: Alan Wake's doppelganger was able to save Alice. The cliffhanger: The real Alan Wake is in the cabin or still in the dark since the biggest threat never came because it's not a lake, its an ocean one last check
