(This question has been bothering me for a while, I will attempt to answer this as a non-mythology person :S sorry if this is a bad answer) I did some snooping around and I found this myth about the Cattle of Helios which mentions that Helios wanted to take vengeance for his slain cattle by going to Hades and shining his light in the underworld - so something about the Hades being lit up? :S
