Biochemical engineers have designed a lamp that uses algae to create light. These algae are able to glow in the dark. How could this example of biotechnology help the environmental quality of the planet? As the organisms inside photosynthesize, they will remove carbon dioxide from the air. Bioluminescence makes heat as a byproduct that can harvest to warm houses. It will increase the amount of light available to underdeveloped countries. The green coloration can be used as a dye to help make clothing for children.

SourMunchkin7806:

@Allison

Allison:

I like C. What do you think?

Allison:

@JustSaiyan answer check.

SourMunchkin7806:

I literally have no clue any answer is good enough for me.

JustSaiyan:

`"As the organisms inside photosynthesize, they will remove carbon dioxide from the air"` could be one as well.

SourMunchkin7806:

Oh jeez which one should i choose?

SourMunchkin7806:

Both of those seem right.

JustSaiyan:

It says "For the Environment" usually meaning nature.

SourMunchkin7806:

Good point.

Allison:

But, Nick. Isn't algae only in water? How can it help with the air if it's underwater?

JustSaiyan:

All plant life uses photosynthesis to absorb CO2 and Release Oxygen, which is necessary for OUR survival.

SourMunchkin7806:

So A?

Allison:

Yep, always trust Nick.

JustSaiyan:

Well it is safe to say children won't be wearing clothes made of algae.

SourMunchkin7806:

Ok, I have some more can you help?

JustSaiyan:

For the next 16 minutes, yes.

SourMunchkin7806:

The image of a scientist collecting a sediment core was taken at the Wild Harbor salt march on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. What evidence is this person hoping to collect from this research? She hopes to discover if the oil is still floating on the surface. She hopes to see if the oil is still present deep down below the surface. She hopes to collect animals that have died from the spill. She hopes to see how easily the oil can be removed from the soil.

Allison:

Ooo uhm.

Allison:

I'm gonna go and cross C out? >.<

SourMunchkin7806:

I was thinking B but i am unsure.

JustSaiyan:

I would say B, but really the image doesn't show much else. It must be A. or B.

SourMunchkin7806:

I think ill go with B.

Allison:

It can be A >.<

JustSaiyan:

It could be any of them. That is the true ugliness of multiple choice.

SourMunchkin7806:

yup

SourMunchkin7806:

As human populations have changed over the years, people have altered the course of rivers and other waterways to better suit their needs. One approach has been through the damming of certain rivers. Over time, many people question whether this effort has been beneficial. What are the negative impacts of damming a river that are being assessed? Dams allow more water to flow into nearby reservoirs, increasing the chances of disease transmission. Dams cause increases in salmon populations because more water is available for them to live in. Dams reduce salmon stocks, which reduces revenue and overall whale populations. Dams keep many species from migrating into the area, which reduces biodiversity.

SourMunchkin7806:

I think this one might be D

JustSaiyan:

Yeah.

SourMunchkin7806:

When animals consume a toxic material and it builds up in their bodies more quickly than it can be metabolized or excreted, it may harm them, as well as humans who consume them. What is this process called? Biomagnification Biological half life Environmental persistence Environmental stability

SourMunchkin7806:

C?

JustSaiyan:

Biomagnification

JustSaiyan:

Or A.

SourMunchkin7806:

Why does using zebrafish as a model organism for genetic testing bring up ethical concerns? As invertebrates, they have more genes than other animals. As vertebrates, they are similar to humans. As an endangered species, they need to be protected. As fragile organisms, extra care needs to be taken when handling them.

SourMunchkin7806:

B?

JustSaiyan:

That would be a positive.

SourMunchkin7806:

C?

SourMunchkin7806:

Or D?
