Why did people think the Gettysburg Address was written on the train on the way to the ceremony? Abraham Lincoln told everyone that's what he had done. The speech was so short and simple. The President hadn't been given much advance notice of his role at the ceremony. Witnesses had seen him working on the speech during the train ride.
