Acetone is a covalent compound, whereas sodium chloride is an ionic compound. Ionic compounds are brittle and break, while covalent compounds are stronger. Covalent compounds have very weak attractions between molecules and so they have very low melting points, unlike ionic compounds, which have a high melting point.
