Read this sentence from paragraph 2. They read it, commented on it in my hearing, and I had the exquisite pleasure of finding it met with their approbation, and that, in their different guesses at the author, none were named but men of some character among us for learning and ingenuity. How does the word exquisite contribute to this passage? It creates emphasis. It clarifies a complex idea. It makes the tone more serious. It makes the tone lighter.
The word 'pleasure' gave a positive tone of the whole passage. (Cause pleasure is a happy feeling ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The word 'exquisite' is an adjective that points to the word 'pleasure'. Here's what I'm thinking: It puts emphasis on the word pleasure, but I don't think it creates emphasis on the passage as a whole. The word pleasure made the tone lighter since the beginning was a intense, where the narrator's paper or whatever was being judged. My best guess would be D in this case, (and if I'm wrong, i'd go with A).
