The word 'exquisite' is an adjective that points to the word 'pleasure'.

Here's what I'm thinking: It puts emphasis on the word pleasure, but I don't think it creates emphasis on the passage as a whole.

The word pleasure made the tone lighter since the beginning was a intense, where the narrator's paper or whatever was being judged.

My best guess would be D in this case, (and if I'm wrong, i'd go with A).
