In this excerpt from Section XVIII of The Way to Rainy Mountain, the author describes his relationship to the space around him. You could see far and wide even at night, by the light of the moon; there was nothing to stand in your way. And when the season turned and it was necessary to move back into the house, there was a sense of confinement and depression for a time. What does this description convey about the author? He finds mystical power in the nighttime sky. He knows that with the change of seasons the end of the Kiowa culture is looming. He connects the emotion of the people to the condition of the land and seasons. He faces depression when he has to be in large spaces alone.
