When the news reporter states that "Lincoln acted the clown" I think what he means by that is that he wanted to get the attention of the people. He didn't mean it in a funny or rude way, he was trying to say that Lincoln was trying to be more down to earth with his people and that he didn't use any terms that they couldn't understand.He wanted people of all intelligence levels to be able to understand what the circumstances of slavery were.
