(for the top picture) as you can see the artist did a great job adding in texture (the waves, clouds, buildings in the back, and the ships) without the texture the painting would be very flat and wouldn't look nearly as good as it does now. The depth is also great in the painting (I am not 100% sure but the point looks to be of the boat in the back). With the waves horizontal strokes help simulate the movement of the water, making the surface appear flat as it recedes into the distance. The bottom one to me is a little less interesting, there is plenty of texture in the roads and the leaves for the trees are not a solid color making it seem less muddy. The trees are what seems to be giving it the most affect of depth.

Hopefully this helps you out a bit.

Shadow:

Neither pictures are symmetrical. The first likely depicts the coast of a sea port, with an array of ships accompanying the coastal town in the deep water (which you can assume due to the dark color). To me it looks like all the ships (past the first dominant two) are facing away from the port, as if they are leaving. Due to the color of all the ships but one being black, there is likely a story behind this painting (piracy perhaps?). As @lexxii said the depth was done very well in this first painting. The strokes feel well defined, and even with distance represented well (making it seem far off) I feel as if I can still make out plenty of details. This contrasts heavily with the second painting, which has much more muddy strokes. I almost feel as if these are both vivid memories from the same person. With the second being from early childhood, and the first being later into adulthood (thus more definition). Another reason why I say that these are memories, is because they seem to be from the same time. These sails, boats, clothes and horse drawn carriages depict scenes you would see in the 18th century.
