Expansion diffusion - a religion spreads by direct contact from believer to nonbeliever

Two sunsets of this would be contagious diffusion, which functions effectively like a disease where a believer converts a nonbeliever, and this process repeats.

The second subset of this is hierarchical diffusion. This actually happened in the state I live in (Hawai‘i). When missionaries came from America to spread Christianity, they were able to convert many of the ali’i (Ruling class) which then helped create an environment for many Hawaiians to become Christians as well.

Relocation diffusion is the last one I know of. Essentially this occurs when a group of a particular religion relocate to an area that does not already have this religion. It’s like a new species introduced to a new environment and they soon proliferate.
