Why did President Johnson deviate from his original plan of punishing Southern aristocrats by making it difficult for states to reenter the Union? Johnson lost interest in the issue of Reconstruction upon Lincoln's assassination. Johnson became more interested in the passage of the Thirteenth through Fifteenth Amendments. Johnson believed that the Union was paramount and the Southshould be represented. Johnson did not believe Southern landowners had done anything wrong leading up to the war. Johnson wanted to show his authority by passing the Civil Rights Bill of 1866, and needed the South to do it. NextReset
