Took approximately 30 seconds to confirm with Google, but it's Greece. Websites cited the mountains impeding large scale farming and the lack of fertile land in general. They had to look elsewhere to cultivate crops. It also makes sense when you realized that Greece was a large naval power of their time. This denotes several things: fishing (for food, since crops were lacking) as well as trade (importing food since they couldn't grow much).
