zarkam21:

Read the following passage from Chapter 8 of The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, in which Crusoe describes how he feels about his life on the island: . . .[A]s I walked about, either on my hunting, or for viewing the country, the anguish of my soul at my condition would break out upon me on a sudden, and my very heart would die within me, to think of the woods, the mountains, the deserts I was in, and how I was a prisoner, locked up with the eternal bars and bolts of the ocean, in an uninhabited wilderness, without redemption. In the midst of the greatest composures of my mind, this would break out upon me like a storm, and make me wring my hands and weep like a child. . . Explain the comparison Crusoe makes between life in prison and life on the island. What are some similarities between these situations? Then, analyze the tone of the passage, and explain how the comparison helps create that tone. Be sure to use specific details from the passage in your response.

zarkam21:

I guess the comparison would be something like he feels trapped on this island as he did inprison

Aureo:

Yes. That is correct. What details from the passage could you use to prove that?

zarkam21:

Crusoe makes comparisons between his life in prison and life on the island. An example of this is specifically shown in this quote from the passage provided. "...and my very heart would die within me, to think of the woods, the mountains, the deserts I was in, and how I was a prisoner, locked up with the eternal bars..." This tells that he feels trapped in on this island just as he did in prison. He is comparing the bars of prison to how he feels about this island. He also feels like a stranger, a nobody in this prison. Maybe even worthless. This is specifically shown in quote, "in an uninhabited wilderness, without redemption..." saying that he feels like he is in an empty place where no one exists. Then he begins to talk about how there is no redemption meaning he can't be saved which is all applied to what it feels to live in prison.

zarkam21:

Would this be a good enough answer,

Aureo:

That's really good! Nice job.

zarkam21:

Do you think i covered the similarities as well?

zarkam21:

I talked about how prison and the island are the same so i guess that aspect is covered

Aureo:

You have the similarities down, the tone is covered as well.

zarkam21:

what would be the tone :/

zarkam21:

I just want to specify that this is the tone

Aureo:

The tone would be dark and reflective. You covered this, but you can certainly add a sentence specifically stating this.

zarkam21:

Thank you so much for all your help!

Aureo:

Np!
