How does a negative feedback work?

it's called ~negative~ because the biological system acts in the "opposite" direction to reduce the effect of a stimulus, with an example being the body's regulation of temperature where the body response to an increase in temperature is to sweat, thus reducing the temperature and returning the system to "normal"
