Do you know what formula to use?

vaporeon246:

yes the midpoint formula

563blackghost:

Did you try it out with 34, if so what did you get?

vaporeon246:

I get what to do i just need help with 36

563blackghost:

For 34 I got (-5,-15) so your answer is incorrect.

vaporeon246:

Wait how? my teacher said to do this |dw:1520383120541:dw|

vaporeon246:

You first add the x or y of the given endpoint then multiply by 2

563blackghost:

That `-8` is a mistype it should be `-3`.

563blackghost:

oh shoot

vaporeon246:

i did what i drew and got -3/2

563blackghost:

let me get that up again

563blackghost:

That is wrong. Remember that each part of the midpoint formula solves both x and y separately. So if we were to split the midpoint formula we would have: \(\large\bf{x=\frac{x_{1}+x_{2}}{2}}\) \(\large\bf{y=\frac{y_{1}+y_{2}}{2}}\) If you plug in your points you would find your solution to be `(-5,-15)`.

563blackghost:

\(\large\bf{-2=\frac{1+x}{2}}\) \(\large\bf{-9=\frac{-3+y}{2}}\) Simplify to find your points.

vaporeon246:

i got x = -3/2 y = -3

563blackghost:

Not quite. Let's do the first one. \(\Large\bf{-2=\frac{1+x}{2}}\) We first need to multiply both sides by 2. \(\large\bf{-2 \color{red}{ \times 2} = \frac{1+x}{2} \color{red}{\times 2} \rightarrow -4=1+x}\) Now we subtract 1 from each side. \(\large\bf{-4 \color{red}{-1} = 1 \color{red}{-1}+x}\) \(\Large\bf{\color{red}{x=-5}}\)

563blackghost:

Follow by the same process for y.

vaporeon246:

but my algebra teacher said to subtract first THEN multiply

563blackghost:

It's first multiply THEN subtract. You have to follow by PEMDAS. Multiplying is first then Subtracting.

vaporeon246:

ok

563blackghost:

Try it with y. \(\large\bf{-9=\frac{-3+y}{2}}\)

vaporeon246:

-15

563blackghost:

There you go XD So your endpoint is `(-5,-15)` ;)

563blackghost:

Try it out with 35.

vaporeon246:

lol thanks but could you help me find y in 36

563blackghost:

First make sure you have `x` correct. You would set it up as the formula used before. \(\Large\bf{-\frac{9}{5}=\frac{-\frac{7}{5}+x}{2}}\) \(\Large\bf{\frac{7}{4}=\frac{\frac{8}{7}+y}{2}}\) Solve to find the two points.

vaporeon246:

ok thanks @563blackghost

563blackghost:

Make sure to use the same format for 35, dont want you getting that wrong >.<

vaporeon246:

ok I won't i got -4. -5

563blackghost:

Which answers are those for?

563blackghost:

Is that for 35? If so, then that is correct.

563blackghost:

@vaporeon246

vaporeon246:

yep

563blackghost:

Okay then it's correct ;D What did you get for 36?

vaporeon246:

-11/5, 33/14

563blackghost:

Correct ;)

vaporeon246:

Thank you for your help @563blackghost

563blackghost:

No problem >.<
