Dates Of Events Missouri Compromise Of 1820- May 8, 1820 Wilmot Proviso- August 8, 1846. Compromise Of 1850-January 29, 1850. Uncle Tom’s Cabin Published- March 20, 1852. Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854- May 30-1854. Dred Scott Decision- March 6, 1857. Lincoln-Douglas Debate-August 21-October 15, 1858. Raid On Harpers Ferry-October 16-18, 1859. Secession Of Southern States- June 8, 1861. 1.Missouri Compromise- Missouri Compromise is typically the name that is spoken when people talk about the legislation passed by the 16th United States Congress on May 8, 1820. This Compromise admitted Maine as a free state, meaning slaves were not allowed and Missouri would be admitted as a slave state, therefore maintaining the power between the North and the South. As another part of the compromise, slavery was not prohibited north of the 36,30 parallel. Perspectives-Really both the South and the North should both be happy with this Compromise, but unhappy at the same time. They would both be happy because each of them gains another state, the South gets Missouri as a slave state, and the North gets Maine as a free state. On the downside that means that they are still equal in Congress as to who has the most power as they are still equal in free/slave states. So neither or the other has enough power to overrule the other in Congress. 2.Wilmot Proviso-The Wilmot Proviso was originally intended to eliminate slavery in the land that was won as a result of the Mexican War. President James K, Polk asked Congress for $2,000,000 to negotiate peace and settle the boundary in Mexico. Perspectives- The South would be all against this, and the North would be all for this. This would have made the land that was taken in the Mexican war free territory which would have upset the balance of power in Congress, causing the North to have more power over the South since it had more states than the North. And for that exact reason the South was completely against this idea. 3.The Compromise Of 1850- This Compromise turned out to be a fun pack of five different bills all passed by Congress. Which included something almost identical to the Wilmot Proviso, California with the boundaries it had at the time would be admitted as a free state, the slave trade was banned in the District Of Columbia ,and a stricter set of Fugitive Slave Laws was enacted. 4.Uncle Tom's Cabin-Uncle Tom's cabin brought upon a new outlook on slavery. This novel allowed the public to read the true issues of slavery. During the time this book was published (1852), slavery was kept on a "down-low," and the reality and harshness of it was not known by everybody. With this book being published, the truth was revealed, and everybody was able to read the cruelty that was placed upon those who were slaves. In fact, this book had such a great impact that it intensified sectionalism in the United States.
I'm sorry, I don't think I can do this. :\
