Vocaloid:

Suggestions for an older beginner to get into art? I've tried lots of self-help books/videos in the past, but I've had trouble keeping up a routine esp. w/o seeing noticeable improvements

Ultrilliam:

I'm not much of a artist anymore, and this one might seem obvious, but look at a old drawing, and compare it to a new one.

hrmmmmmmmm It's natural to first start off with videos/books but the thing is when you do those type of drawings you sometimes try to mimic it in a way, you might change it but you seem to incorporate THEIR artwork into yours. The best way for you to start is to try a drawing out yourself, see the key areas you need help in. It doesn't need to be perfect it just needs to be YOU. Look toward books/videos for some aid like better forming and some techniques they have, try and mix them together and make one that suits you. Like for example I saw one video that would use the stick method for base making but I tried that and....i failed x'D and there was another that use a circle type of method (for chibi) and that didn't work out well either...but I somewhat took in the info from them both and sort formed to something I felt comfortable with and the outcome was quiet nice, but it need ALOT of improvement but it was a step forward. I found this way to be easier for me, but you know it's different for everyone >.< as for time to draw....just draw whenever you have time. I don't really have a routine I just sketch here and there and no matter how small of a time you have each time you draw you improve by a bit which is great considering your goal. OH also look at speedpaints! I do this all the time its sort of like a video teaching you how to draw but not quiet, its simply seeing the process happen and I find it quiet helpful, it helped me make my first base from scratch >.< I mean some think they are not an artist but naturally everyone is an artist ;) no matter what it is, it's art! You'll get there I know it! I don't know if that's an okay explanation >.< but I tried.

honestly I took art for 3 years and the most dreadful thing was having to keep a routine as assignments, let art flow to you and look for inspiration of things you want to recreate or give your own twist to. There are millions of techniques to chose from and many ways to create your own style. If you want advice you can ask me and I can give you tips I've learned over the years through mistakes and from others.

is usually best to start by recreating an image because that way your hands and eyes get accustomed to how things should look on paper or screen.
