@TheSmartOne Time to shine baby

cookiemonster:

@TheSmartOne please help :)

TheSmartOne:

Can you give me an example of a quadratic equation. Just make one up. Keep it simple though

cookiemonster:

i dont have an example

cookiemonster:

i just need to know like why it has the shape of the parabola :) we dont need to solve an equation

TheSmartOne:

Yes I know, however to answer the question you need to know what a quadratic function is. From the following options can you tell me which one is a quadratic equation y=x^4+x^2+8 y=x^2-9 y=x^3-1 y=5x+2

cookiemonster:

umm a

TheSmartOne:

Unfortunately you're wrong. Here graph them all and see which one gives you a parabola shape Use https://www.desmos.com/calculator

cookiemonster:

ohhh its the second one

TheSmartOne:

Exactly! Now graph these few equations and tell me what's similar between them y=x^2+4x+4 y=x^2 y=x^2-16 y=x^2+2x+1 Do these all look like parabolas?

cookiemonster:

i got the answer already!!! :) i have another one though :) How do you find the vertex or the line of symmetry?

TheSmartOne:

That's great. If you want to run your answer through me that's fine. For finding the vertex and line of symmetry, you need to know the formula? Do you know the formula? Do you know what the line of symmetry is? Does it divide the parabola? If so, where does it divide it from?

cookiemonster:

i kinda need to answer these fast... so ill tell you later , but lets move on to the next one

cookiemonster:

The axis of symmetry always passes through the vertex of the parabola . The -coordinate of the vertex is the equation of the axis of symmetry of the parabola. For a quadratic function in standard form, y = a x 2 + b x + c , the axis of symmetry is a vertical line x = − b 2 a . this is what i think the answer is for the latest question... am i right?

TheSmartOne:

That is right, so axis of symmetry gives you the x-coordinate of the vertex. Knowing that, how would you find the y-coordinate of the vertex?

cookiemonster:

how many possible solutions can you get from solving a quadratic equation? what is the relationship of the solutions to the graph of the quadratic equation?

cookiemonster:

@TheSmartOne

TheSmartOne:

Do you have any idea? Graph y=(x+1)(x+1) That's the same thing as y=x^2+2x+1 What can you tell me about how many solutions there are and where they are

cookiemonster:

is the answer that there can be as many as 4 real solutions?

cookiemonster:

please reply..

TheSmartOne:

Did you graph what I asked you to graph? Imagine a question with the quadratic equation y=(x+1)(x-2) How many solutions are there? Hint: a solution is when y=0
