Research Topic: Should college athletes be paid to play sports?

Shadow:

Is this an argumentative essay/

random231:

simplysadie:

Yes @Shadow

One of the first contentions that I recall is that they bring a lot of money to the school. Due to the popularity of some of these individuals in their high school careers, and their skillset, many come to watch them play. This results in ticket sales and traffic in the food courts. Additionally, it is correct that many college athletes get scholarships for a free or cheaper education. But they don't receive much support beyond that. Being a college athlete isn't easy. You have to balance schoolwork, as well as the demands of being on a team (practice, games, training, etc). This usually means that you can't get a job to sustain yourself. Most people are not rich going to college and need those scholarships. When they don't have the time to have a job, they can sometimes fall short when it comes to certain necessities, such as food. Now, all NCAA schools have the option to pay their students a stipend (which is basically like an allowance), but this is optional. Because it is not mandatory, many schools don't pay their athletes. I believe there are articles regarding students who couldn't get the proper nutrients and suffered as a result.

Shadow:

^This is all 'For' college athletes being paid.

It was a debate topic for Public Forum last year. There is a free website which provides a wealth of ideas/research on each debate topic.
