MackGrum:

Calculate the concentration (in grams per liter) when 9.68 g of MgSO4.7H2O is dissolved in 105.0 mL of water. Give your answer to the correct number of significant figures.

tigerlover:

Hello and welcome to QuestionCove MackGrum! My names tigerlover and I will be assisting you with your question today. Do you have any options? :)

MackGrum:

Is this like any other Molarity problem out there? What does the dot mean in between the 4 and 7 in the compound?

tigerlover:

Oh no. Looks like this is too advanced for me. I will tag someone who can help you with your question. Many apologies!

tigerlover:

@Vocaloid Can you Help @MackGrum here?

dude:

We have to find the molar mass of \(MgSO_4\)

TheSmartOne:

The dot in between simply states that there's 7 water molecules attracted to it. So basically it's in a water solution. I'll check my notes tomorrow to make sure haha but don't worry too much about it. Just remember conncentration is molarity = moles solute/L solution You'll need to convert grams to moles first

TheSmartOne:

This is what is in my professor's slide: "Hydrates: compounds that have a specific number of water molecules within their solid structure. Water molecules may be driven off by heating a substance (anhydrous - without water)" You'll have to include the water when calculating the molecular mass.

Zale101:

Molarity is defined as mols of solute divided by liters of solution. Solution is the total liters of solute and solvent. In this case, volume is only given by the solvent which is water.

Zale101:

This case will be solvable if 105 ml is considered to be liters of solution.
