Which fallacy is evident in these lines? We need to cut our funding for space research and redirect the funds to more important causes. That's what the European nations do.

Shadow:

I would say that if you could only pick one fallacy, it would have to be oversimplification. In order to impact these 'important causes' (which by the way, is subjective...given "important"), one would need to allocate 'x' amount of cash towards these causes. We don't know what these causes are, so we don't know how much funds it would take. But here is the caveat. What is the United States budget compared to these European nations? A lot bigger. Do they spend the same amount on space research? Probably not. They don't give us that information, and budget size as well as comparison of space research expenditures is not mentioned at all. They oversimplify a complicated issue...to just cutting an entire program. Can cutting a space program even help these "important causes." U.S. doesn't spend that much % of its budget on space research (somewhere around $11-22billion to my recollection), but that's a lot more free flowing cash than what these European nations have. In order to impact these causes, they likely had to cut other programs as well, and do a number of other things. Again, oversimplification.
