Three Algebra 1 students are comparing how fast their social media posts have spread. Their results are shown in the following table. Student Amber Ben Carter Description Amber shared her photo with 3 people. They continued to share it, so the number of shares increases every day as shown by the function. Ben shared his post with 2 friends. Each of those friends shares with 3 more every day, so the number of shares triples every day. Carter shared his post with 10 friends, who each share with only 2 people each day. Social Media Post Shares f(x) = 3(4)x Day Number of Shares 0 2 1 6 2 18 Carter shared his post with 10 friends, who each share with only 2 people each day. Using the functions for each student, predict how many shares each student's post will have received on Day 3 and then on Day 10. Justify your answers.
you think you could help me with this question?
?
Amber's function is f(x)=3(4)^x Can you write a similar function for Ben? How many friends does he originally share it with? How many friends do each of those friends share it to? Those are two numbers, figure out where they go in the equation and make sure it's right by plugging in the numbers they gave you.
for ben the function is f(x)=2(3^x)
Good job! Can you do the same for Carter?
for carter the function would be f(x)=10(2^x)
Good! Now all you have to do is plug in x=3 and x=10 into all three functions. That will tell you how many shares each person would get on day 3 and day 10 respectively.
ohhh okayyy thank you so much
It was my pleasure!
@Tranquility hey sorry to bother you again but when i did that for ben i got 18 and thats the same number of shares for ben as the 2nd day
Tell me these values Amber 3rd day Amber 10th day Ben 3rd day Ben 10th day Carter 3rd day Carter 10th day
wait do i plug in 3 in fx too or just the x exponent
You just plug it in for x and then whatever f(x) is. Basically that becomes f(3) because you replaced x with 3. But we want to know the value of f(3) so whatever is on the other side of the equal sign has to be simplified.
so for the 3rd day for ben it would be 18?
No. 3^3 = 3*3*3
oh 27
And then multiply that by 2. You'll definitely need a calculator for when you're trying to plug in 10.
alright thanks hold on
@Tranquility for ben 3rd day-54 10th day- 118,098 for amber 3rd day- 192 10th day-3,145,728 for carter 3rd day- 80 10th day- 10,240
?
@Tranquility
That is correct. Good job.
thanks so much for helping!
