Just a general question for my TOK class Is it ever ethical to attack someone who has different views? Why?

notdude:

Also, this is more of an ethics question, eh

Shadow:

Attack in what way

notdude:

Physically hurt

Shadow:

also, TOK?

notdude:

Theory of Knowledge

Shadow:

No

Shadow:

To do so would be intolerant, and would exemplify that you have no argument to oppose their view. There is simply feeling vs view.

BenLindquist:

no

BenLindquist:

If you want to have an enemy or possibly get arrested then the person can do whatever what she/he wants.

notdude:

I wasn't looking too much into the immediate consequences, I just want to know if it sounds ethical to you

Shadow:

Interesting question though - I suspect it arises from the growing conversation around the First Amendment and whether some speech is protect. Some people have been attacked over the speech that they use, with the attackers claiming that it is hate speech (and subsequently that hate speech is not protected under the First Amendment). Ironically, the only type of speech that is not protected under the First Amendment, is one that incites violence (or illegal in nature, such as child pornography).

BenLindquist:

Child Orange is illegal and will getcha into jail or a fine

RacconEggs:

Well tbh the first amendment states that you have freedom of speech but there are limitation to it like saying "I want to kill the president" is not legally allowed and should be punished for Hate speech. The whole ban all guns thing is not all in my favor but when someone says don't ban all guns and someone attacks you on it in a physical way because they do not agree with your beliefs is childish and immature. Many people think debating is basically attacking someone on a vocal level and they might consider it hate speech but since the whole new group of millennials are very "fragile" They consider a lot of things to be "unequal or unfair"
